Mahabaleshwar Sightseeing Trip — Travel Guide

Mahabaleshwar Sightseeing Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads

Mahabaleshwar is the most loved hill station near Pune, and it works at any length of trip, from a quick day out to a three day holiday. This guide covers the distance, the points worth your time, the strawberry season and how to choose between a one, two or three day plan.

How far is Mahabaleshwar from Pune?
Mahabaleshwar is about 120 km from Pune. The drive takes roughly three to three and a half hours via Wai and Panchgani, longer on weekends when traffic builds up on the ghat roads. Panchgani is about 100 km from Pune, and Mahabaleshwar is another 18 to 20 km further.

Option A: A 1 day trip
A Mahabaleshwar one day trip from Pune means leaving around 6:30 am. You see Table Land at Panchgani, have lunch in Mahabaleshwar, visit Venna Lake and two or three viewpoints, and start back by 5:30 pm. It works for a first visit.

Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip
Day 1 covers Panchgani and Venna Lake. Day 2 covers Pratapgad and the viewpoints. This Mahabaleshwar 2 days trip is the one I suggest for families.

Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip
Day 1 is Panchgani and the lake, Day 2 is Pratapgad and the old temples, and Day 3 is the viewpoints. It is a complete Mahabaleshwar tour package from Pune.

The places worth your time

Venna Lake: A calm lake with boating, and strawberry and corn stalls along the road.
Arthur’s Seat: A viewpoint known for its sheer drop into the valley.
Kate’s Point: A viewpoint with a wide valley view, and a short walk.
Elephant’s Head Point (Needle Hole Point): A rock formation that looks like an elephant’s head.
Wilson Point: One of the highest points in the area, popular for sunrise and sunset.
Lingmala Waterfall: A waterfall that is best in or just after the monsoon.
Pratapgad Fort: A hill fort tied to the Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal Khan story.
Old Mahabaleshwar and Panch Ganga Temple: The source of the Krishna river and the old Shiva temple.
Table Land, Panchgani: A large flat plateau, popular for walks and horse rides.
Mapro Garden: A well-known garden and fruit products stop near Panchgani.

Strawberry season
Mahabaleshwar produces most of Maharashtra’s strawberries. The season generally runs from November to February or March, and farm visits, strawberries with cream and strawberry products are the highlights. In the monsoon and summer, strawberries are not at their best.

Pratapgad Fort
The fort is about 20 to 25 km from Mahabaleshwar town. It has a long flight of steps, a temple, a statue of Shivaji Maharaj and wide views over the valley. Allow two to three hours, and wear shoes with grip.

Sunrise and sunset points
Wilson Point is popular at sunrise, and Arthur’s Seat and Kate’s Point are lovely in the morning light. Clear weather is the key, so October to February gives the best chance.

The monsoon in Mahabaleshwar
The hills are covered in mist and waterfalls, but visibility can drop to a few metres. Rain is very heavy, and some points can be closed for safety. If you plan a monsoon trip, keep a rain plan and follow local instructions.

What to eat
Strawberries with cream, corn on the cob, fresh fruit, fudge and local jams are the highlights. You will also find misal pav, thalis and Maharashtrian meals in family restaurants.

Shopping
Look for strawberry products, jams, honey, chikki and locally made leather items. Buy from established shops and check dates on packs.

Best time to visit
October to February is pleasant and clear. The monsoon is dramatic but wet. Summers are cool compared to Pune but crowded. Weekdays are far calmer than weekends.

Which car for which group?
Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on the ghat roads, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups.

Where to stay
Mahabaleshwar has hotels, resorts and homestays in every budget. Rooms fill up on weekends, in May and on holiday periods, so book early.

Practical tips
Start early, carry a light jacket, wear grippy shoes, keep valuables minimal and follow safety rules at viewpoints, especially near cliff edges.
