Day-wise Itinerary
Day 1: OPTION – 1 DAY TRIP
Day 2: OPTION – 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT
Day 1: Mumbai to Aurangabad, Grishneshwar and Ellora
5:00 AM – Pickup from Mumbai or Navi Mumbai. Carry a light shawl and some snacks. We drive through Thane and Kasara, and the early hours pass quickly.
8:00 AM – Breakfast near Nashik. Try the local misal or poha with hot tea. It is a good time to stretch and freshen up.
12:30 PM – Reach Aurangabad. We have a quick lunch and a short break to freshen up. If hotel check-in is ready, you can leave your bags.
2:00 PM – Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga darshan. Verul is about 45 minutes to an hour from the city. Men are generally asked to remove shirts in the sanctum, so wear a clean cloth. Photography is not allowed inside the inner area.
3:30 PM – Ellora Caves. With limited time, we focus on the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), the Dashavatara Cave (Cave 15) and the Vishvakarma Cave (Cave 10). The caves close around evening, so check timing. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays, so we avoid this plan on a Tuesday.
6:30 PM – Drive to the hotel in Aurangabad. Dinner at leisure. Sleep early, since Day 2 starts early.
Overnight stay in Aurangabad.
Day 2: Ajanta Caves and a Late Return
5:30 AM – Early breakfast or packed breakfast, and check-out. We leave for Ajanta, about two and a half to three hours away.
9:00 AM – Reach Ajanta and take the shuttle bus to the caves. Start with Cave 1, with its Padmapani and Vajrapani paintings. Then see Caves 2, 16 and 17 for their paintings and Caves 19 and 26 for the carved chaitya halls and the reclining Buddha. Ajanta is generally closed on Mondays, so we avoid Day 2 on a Monday.
1:00 PM – Lunch near the car park.
2:00 PM – Start the return to Mumbai via Aurangabad and Nashik, with breaks.
8:30 PM – Dinner stop on the highway.
1:00 AM (approx.) – Reach Mumbai, depending on traffic. This is a very long day, and I strongly suggest the 3 day plan if you can manage it.
Day 3: OPTION – 3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS TOUR PACKAGE
Day 1: Mumbai to Aurangabad, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki
5:30 AM – Pickup from Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, and a short briefing.
8:30 AM – Breakfast near Nashik, with hot tea.
1:00 PM – Reach Aurangabad, lunch and hotel check-in. Rest for an hour.
3:30 PM – Bibi Ka Maqbara. Walk through the garden and see the dome and the jali work. Take photos along the central path. Spend about an hour here.
5:00 PM – Panchakki. See the old water mill and the quiet pond. It is a gentle, easy stop after the long drive.
6:00 PM – Return to the hotel. Dinner at leisure. Sleep early.
Overnight stay in Aurangabad.
Day 2: Ajanta Caves
7:00 AM – Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Ajanta, about two and a half to three hours away. Carry water, a cap and a torch.
10:00 AM – Reach Ajanta and take the shuttle bus to the caves. Begin with Cave 1 and its famous paintings, then see Caves 2, 4, 16 and 17. Take your time in the dim light, since the paintings reward slow looking. Flash photography is not allowed.
1:00 PM – Lunch at the food court near the entrance.
2:00 PM – Visit Caves 19 and 26, with their carved chaitya halls and the large reclining Buddha. Then walk to the viewpoint across the river for the full horseshoe view of the caves, if energy and light allow.
4:30 PM – Start the return drive to Aurangabad.
7:00 PM – Reach the hotel. Dinner at leisure. Ajanta is generally closed on Mondays, so we avoid this day on a Monday.
Overnight stay in Aurangabad.
Day 3: Grishneshwar, Ellora and Return
8:00 AM – Breakfast and check-out.
9:00 AM – Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga darshan. The morning is calmer, so the queue is usually smoother. Men are generally asked to remove shirts in the sanctum. Spend a few minutes admiring the carved shikhara.
10:45 AM – Ellora Caves. Start at the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16) and walk around the courtyard, the elephant sculptures and the carved epic scenes. Then see Cave 15 (Dashavatara) and Cave 10 (Vishvakarma). If you still have energy, visit one or two Jain caves at the far end. A guide helps greatly. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays, so we plan around this.
1:30 PM – Lunch near Ellora.
2:30 PM – Start the return to Mumbai via Aurangabad and Nashik.
5:30 PM – Tea and dinner break on the highway.
9:30 PM to 10:30 PM – Reach Mumbai, depending on traffic.
Day 4: OPTION – 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS TOUR PACKAGE
Day 1: Same as Option B, Day 1. Overnight in Aurangabad.
Day 2: Same as Option B, Day 2. Overnight in Aurangabad.

6:00 PM – Check in at Shirdi and rest.

Know Before You Go

- Pack according to Maharashtra's season — check the local weather a few days before departure and pack accordingly.
- Keep your booking voucher and driver/vehicle details handy (sent by Tripleads after confirmation).
- Please be ready at the pickup point 10–15 minutes before the scheduled time to keep the itinerary on track.
- Carry some cash for personal expenses, tips and anything not covered under Inclusions — card/UPI acceptance can be patchy in remote areas.
- Mobile network can be weak in ghats, valleys and remote stretches of the route — inform family of your rough schedule in advance.
- Hill/high-altitude routes can cause motion sickness or breathlessness — carry basic medication and inform the driver if you need frequent stops.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is the distance from Mumbai to Ajanta and Ellora Caves, and how long does the drive take?
Aurangabad is about 330 to 350 km from Mumbai, around six to seven hours by road. Ellora is about 30 km from the city and Ajanta is about 100 km, so Mumbai to Ajanta is roughly 430 to 450 km. That is why we plan at least one overnight stay.
Q2. Can we see both Ajanta and Ellora Caves in one day?
It is not practical. The two sites are about 100 km apart in different directions, and Ajanta alone needs three to four hours. For a comfortable visit, I recommend our 3 day plan, with one day for each site.
Q3. How many days are needed for a Mumbai to Ajanta Ellora Caves trip?
Three days and two nights is the comfortable plan. A 2 day trip is possible but tiring, and a 4 day plan adds Shirdi and splits the return drive.
Q4. Which day are Ajanta and Ellora Caves closed?
Ajanta is generally closed on Mondays and Ellora is generally closed on Tuesdays. The Grishneshwar temple stays open. Please confirm the current schedule before booking, and tell us your date so we can plan the days correctly.
Q5. What is the best time to visit Ajanta and Ellora Caves?
October to March is the best time, with cool mornings and comfortable walking. The monsoon is green and beautiful, but paths can be slippery, and summers are hot.
Q6. Can private vehicles go inside Ajanta Caves, and is photography allowed?
Private vehicles usually stop at the car park, and visitors take the official shuttle bus to the caves. Photography is generally allowed, but flash is not allowed in the painted caves. Rules can change, so we confirm the current guidance before your trip.
Q7. Is a cab better than a train or bus, and what does the package include?
A cab is far more practical, because the caves are far from each other and from the railway station. The price includes a private AC cab, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and sightseeing guidance. Hotel, meals, entry tickets, shuttle charges, guide fees and personal expenses depend on the option and your quotation.

Mumbai To Ajanta Ellora Caves Trip — Travel Guide
Planning a Mumbai to Ajanta Ellora Caves Trip? A Practical Guide for 2, 3 and 4 Days
If you have searched “Mumbai to Ajanta Ellora Caves trip” and found long history essays but no clear plan, this guide is for you. Ajanta and Ellora are two of India’s finest heritage sites, and both are within reach of Mumbai for a long weekend. But the timing, the closing days and the distances can catch first-time visitors off guard. As a planner at Trip Leads, I have written this guide to help you plan with confidence.
Where are Ajanta and Ellora?
Both sites are in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) region of Maharashtra. Ellora is about 30 km from the city, and Ajanta is about 100 km in a different direction, towards Jalgaon district. The two sites are not next to each other, which is why a single-day visit to both is rarely practical.
The route and distance from Mumbai
Aurangabad is around 330 to 350 km from Mumbai, which takes six to seven hours by road with stops. A common route goes through Thane, Kasara and Nashik district, and then on to Aurangabad. Ajanta is a further 100 km or so from the city, taking around two and a half to three hours. Ellora is under an hour from the city. The total distance from Mumbai to Ajanta is roughly 430 to 450 km, so we plan one night in Aurangabad at the very least.
Option A: A 2 day, 1 night trip
Day 1 is the drive to Aurangabad, followed by Grishneshwar darshan and the Kailasa Temple at Ellora in the afternoon. On Day 2 you leave early for Ajanta, see the main caves in the morning and begin the long return. You reach Mumbai after midnight, so this plan suits only fit travellers. If you can manage a third day, I always suggest Option B.
Option B: A 3 day, 2 night trip
This is the plan I recommend. Day 1 is the drive and a relaxed evening at Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki. Day 2 is entirely for Ajanta, so there is no rush in front of the paintings. Day 3 covers Grishneshwar and a proper Ellora visit before the return to Mumbai. Every site gets enough time.
Option C: A 4 day, 3 night trip
After Ellora on Day 3, you drive to Shirdi and stay overnight. On Day 4 you take morning darshan and return to Mumbai, a distance of roughly 240 to 250 km. It splits the return drive and suits families and senior citizens.
The places worth your time
Ajanta Caves: About 30 Buddhist caves cut into a horseshoe-shaped gorge. The early caves (such as Caves 9, 10 and 12) belong to the earlier phase, while the later caves hold the famous paintings and carved halls. Cave 1 has the well-known paintings of Padmapani and Vajrapani. Caves 2, 16 and 17 have important wall paintings. Caves 19 and 26 are fine chaitya halls with carved stupas, and Cave 26 has a large reclining Buddha. A viewpoint across the river gives a full view of the horseshoe curve of caves.
Ellora Caves: The Buddhist group (Caves 1 to 12) includes Cave 10, known as the Vishvakarma or “Carpenter’s” Cave, with its ribbed ceiling and a Buddha stupa. The Hindu group (Caves 13 to 29) includes the Kailasa Temple in Cave 16, built by carving down from the top of a rock, and Cave 15, the Dashavatara Cave. The Jain group (Caves 30 to 34) is quieter and has delicate carving.
Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga: One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, right next to Ellora in Verul. The temple was rebuilt in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar. Men are generally asked to remove shirts in the sanctum, so carry a clean cloth.
Bibi Ka Maqbara: A 17th-century mausoleum often called the “Taj of the Deccan”, built by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother.
Panchakki: A 17th-century water-powered flour mill, associated with the Sufi saint Baba Shah Musafir, with a quiet pond and gardens.
Shirdi Sai Baba Temple (Option C): One of the most visited pilgrimage places in Maharashtra, easily added on the way home.
Closing days you should know
Ajanta is generally closed on Mondays, and Ellora is generally closed on Tuesdays. The Grishneshwar temple remains open on those days. That is why it matters to share your travel dates early: we arrange your days around the closures. For Option B, for example, Ajanta falls on Day 2 and Ellora on Day 3, so we avoid starting on a Sunday or Monday.
Best time to visit Ajanta and Ellora
October to March is the most comfortable. Mornings are cool and the afternoons are bearable. During the monsoon, the Ajanta gorge looks stunning and waterfalls appear around Ellora, but the paths can be slippery, so carry a rain jacket and wear shoes with a good grip. In summer, temperatures rise sharply, so we keep outdoor walking to the early morning and the late afternoon.
What to eat
Aurangabad is known for naan qalia, a rich mutton curry served with soft naan, and for vegetarian Maharashtrian thalis. Near the caves, food options are simple, so we plan lunch stops in advance. Tell us your food preference and we will suggest clean restaurants.
Where to stay
Aurangabad has many hotels in different budgets, from simple family hotels to comfortable business hotels. Staying in the city is the easiest option, since both caves are within a day trip. In Option C, we also arrange a stay in Shirdi. Book early on weekends and long weekends.
Practical tips from the road
Start early on cave days; mornings are cooler and less crowded.
Wear comfortable shoes and carry a water bottle.
At Ajanta, private vehicles stop at the car park, and shuttle buses take visitors to the caves. Carry some cash for tickets and shuttles.
A local guide adds a lot, especially at Ajanta, where the paintings tell stories.
Flash photography is not allowed in the painted caves, so keep your camera flash off.
Carry a small torch for dimly lit caves.
For elders, we keep walking short and plan rest stops. There are steps at both sites.
Which option should you choose?
If you have only a long weekend and are fit, choose the 2 day trip. For the best balance, choose the 3 day trip. To add Shirdi and keep the return easy, choose the 4 day tour package. If you are not sure, tell us your group size, ages and interests, and we will suggest what fits.

If you have only a long weekend and are fit, choose the 2 day trip. For the best balance, choose the 3 day trip. To add Shirdi and keep the return easy, choose the 4 day tour package. If you are not sure, tell us your group size, ages and interests, and we will suggest what fits.
