Day 1: OPTION – 1 DAY TRIP Day 1: Mumbai to Alibaug and Back 6:30 AM – Pickup from Mumbai, Thane or Navi Mumbai. Carry sunscreen, a cap, slippers and a towel. The early drive through Navi Mumbai and Panvel is quiet. 8:30 AM – Breakfast near Panvel or Pen. Try hot misal or poha with tea, and use the stop to stretch. 10:00 AM – Reach Alibaug Beach. Walk along the shore and enjoy the sea breeze. If the tide is low, walk across to the Kolaba Fort, a sea fort built in 1680 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. See the old gateways, the freshwater wells and the small temples inside. We check the tide table first, and do not cross if the water is rising. 12:30 PM – Lunch. Choose a fish thali or a vegetarian thali at a good local restaurant. 2:30 PM – Varsoli Beach or Nagaon Beach. Varsoli is quiet and good for a stroll, while Nagaon is wider and has water sports in the season, with licensed operators. Keep to safe areas, and watch children closely. 4:30 PM – Tea and snacks by the sea, and a short rest. 5:30 PM – Start the return to Mumbai, with a tea break on the way. 9:00 PM (approx.) – Reach Mumbai, depending on traffic. Trip ends in a single day. For the best experience, I suggest weekdays.

We check the tide table before you leave, and do not cross if the water is rising. 5:00 PM – Alibaug Beach. Walk along the shore and watch the sunset over the sea. Try roasted corn and tea from the stalls. 7:30 PM – Dinner at leisure, with fresh seafood or vegetarian options. Overnight stay in Alibaug. One of the finest beaches on this coast, with white sand and clear water. Swim only in safe areas and avoid deep water. Stay till sunset. 6:00 PM – Drive to Murud, about 15 km. 6:45 PM – Check in at your stay and rest. 8:00 PM – Dinner at leisure. Overnight stay in Murud. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the distance from Mumbai to Alibaug, and how long does it take by road?
Alibaug is roughly 95 to 110 km from Mumbai, depending on your starting point, and the drive takes about three to three and a half hours. Weekend traffic around Panvel and Pen can add time.
Q2. Can we do a Mumbai to Alibaug trip in one day?
Yes. Leave early, spend the day at the beach and Kolaba Fort and return in the evening. But on weekends and long weekends the traffic and crowds can be heavy, so a weekday or a 2 day plan is more comfortable.
Q3. Is it better to go to Alibaug by ferry or by road?
Both work. The ferry from the Gateway of India to Mandwa takes about an hour but is followed by a road transfer, and it mostly runs in the fair season and pauses during the monsoon. A cab by road works in every season, which is why it is our standard plan.
Q4. What is the best time to visit Alibaug?
October to February is the best time, with a cool breeze and calm sea. March to May is hot, and June to September is the monsoon, with a rough sea and many water activities and ferries paused.
Q5. How do we reach Kolaba Fort, and is it open all the time?
Kolaba Fort can be reached on foot across a shallow stretch at low tide. Access depends on the tide, so we check the tide table and plan your visit accordingly. Please do not cross if the water is rising.
Q6. Can we visit Kashid and Murud-Janjira along with Alibaug?
Yes. Kashid is about 30 km from Alibaug and Murud is about 50 km, and both are included in our 3 day tour package. The Janjira boat service depends on the sea condition and stops in the monsoon
Q7. Is a cab better than a bus or ferry, and what does the package include?
A cab is more practical, because the beaches, forts and temples are spread across the district and local transport is limited. The price includes a private AC cab, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and sightseeing guidance. Stay, meals, entry tickets, boat charges, water sports, guide fees and personal expenses depend on the option and your quotation.

Mumbai To Alibaug Trip — Travel Guide

Planning a Mumbai to Alibaug Trip? A Practical Guide for 1, 2 and 3 Days

If you have searched “Mumbai to Alibaug trip” and found lists of beaches but no clear plan, this guide is for you. Alibaug is the closest real beach getaway from Mumbai, and it is popular for a reason. But traffic on weekends, ferry timings, the tide at Kolaba Fort and the monsoon sea can all affect your day. As a travel planner at Trip Leads, I have written this guide to help you plan with confidence.

The route and the distance
Alibaug is roughly 95 to 110 km from Mumbai by road, depending on your starting point, and the drive takes about three to three and a half hours with a break. A common route goes through Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Pen and Vadkhal, and then on to Alibaug. The Atal Setu has made the crossing from south Mumbai faster for many travellers. Weekend traffic around Panvel and Pen can add an hour, so we choose the best leaving time for your date.

By ferry from the Gateway of India
Many people also love reaching Alibaug by sea. Passenger launches and the Ro-Ro ferry run from the Gateway of India or Bhaucha Dhakka to Mandwa, which takes about an hour, followed by a road transfer of about 20 km. Ferries mostly run in the fair season from October to May and pause during the rough monsoon sea. Timings change often, so always check the current schedule. We can plan a ferry-based trip on request.

Option A: A 1 day trip
It is possible, and many Mumbai families do it. You leave around 6:30 AM, reach Alibaug by mid-morning, spend the day at the beach and Kolaba Fort, and return in the evening. You reach Mumbai by night. The challenge is weekend traffic and the tide. I suggest this plan on a weekday, and for travellers who enjoy long drives.

Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip
This plan removes the rush. Day 1 is for the drive, lunch, Kolaba Fort and sunset at Alibaug Beach. Day 2 is a gentle morning at Kihim and Nagaon, with an optional visit to the Kankeshwar hill temple, before a relaxed return. Couples, families and senior citizens especially benefit from this slower plan.

Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip
This plan adds the southern coast. On Day 2 you visit the Portuguese-era forts at Revdanda and Korlai and watch the sunset at Kashid Beach. On Day 3 you take a boat to Murud-Janjira before returning to Mumbai. It turns a beach break into a coastal history trip.

The places worth your time
Alibaug Beach and Kolaba Fort: The main beach is next to the town, and the Kolaba Fort stands in the sea a short distance away. At low tide you can walk across the shallow stretch to the fort. Inside, you can see old gateways, freshwater wells and small temples. Always check the tide before you go, and do not cross if the water is rising.
Varsoli Beach: A quiet, long beach a few kilometres north of the town, known for its calm atmosphere.
Kihim Beach: A peaceful beach about 8 km from Alibaug, popular with birdwatchers and nature lovers, especially in the cooler months.
Nagaon Beach: A wide beach that is a popular spot for water sports, operated by licensed operators in the season.
Akshi Beach: A long, less crowded beach, good for an easy walk.
Kankeshwar Temple: A Shiva temple on a hill, about 10 to 15 km from Alibaug, reached by a long flight of steps. The climb is for fit visitors, and the view from the top is lovely.
Revdanda Fort (Option C): A Portuguese-era fort and settlement on the creek near Alibaug, with a quiet beach nearby.
Korlai Fort (Option C): A hilltop Portuguese fort with a lighthouse, near the village of Korlai, known for its unique Portuguese-influenced dialect.
Kashid Beach (Option C): One of the finest beaches on the Konkan coast, known for its white sand and clear water, around 30 km from Alibaug.
Murud-Janjira Fort (Option C): A mighty sea fort, reached by a short boat ride from Rajapuri jetty. It was ruled by the Siddis and is known as a fort that stayed unconquered for centuries.

Tides, ferries and the monsoon
Kolaba Fort access depends entirely on the tide. We check the tide table for your date and plan the visit accordingly. During the monsoon, the sea becomes rough, water sports pause, ferries may be suspended and the Janjira boat service stops. Alibaug is beautiful in the rains, with lush green hills and misty skies, but plan beach activity around safety and weather.

Best time to visit
October to February is the best time, with a cool breeze and calm sea. March to May is hot, so plan beach visits for the evening. June to September is the monsoon, which is good for green scenery and fewer crowds but not for water activities or Janjira. Weekends and long weekends are always crowded, so a weekday is calmer.

What to eat
Alibaug and the Konkan coast are known for fresh seafood, including fish thali, bombil fry, prawns and crab, as well as simple vegetarian thalis, sol kadhi and modak or ukadiche modak in season. Tell us your food preference and we will suggest clean, reliable restaurants.

Where to stay
Alibaug has a wide range of stays, from simple homestays and family-run lodges to resorts and villas near the beaches. Stays fill up early on weekends and long weekends, so book ahead. In Option C, we arrange a stay in Murud. Tell us your budget and group size, and we will suggest options.

Practical tips from the road

Start early; weekend traffic around Panvel and Pen can be heavy.
Check the tide table before planning Kolaba Fort.
Swim only in safe areas, avoid deep water and never swim after dark.
Book water sports only with licensed operators.
Carry sunscreen, a cap, slippers and a towel.
Keep valuables light and use a waterproof pouch for phones.
For elders and small children, we plan extra rest and short walks.

Which option should you choose?
For a quick escape on a free day, choose the 1 day trip. For a calm weekend with a night by the sea, choose the 2 day trip. To add Revdanda, Korlai, Kashid and Janjira, choose the 3 day tour package. If you cannot decide, tell us your group size, ages and interests, and we will recommend what fits.

Book with Trip Leads
