Day-wise Itinerary

Day 1: OPTION – 1 DAY TRIP Previous night, 10:00 PM – Departure from Mumbai. Our driver picks you up from Dadar, Thane or Mulund. Carry a pillow, a light shawl and some snacks. The overnight drive passes through Nashik district, with a tea break around midnight. Try to sleep as much as possible, because the next day is packed. 6:30 AM – Arrival in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. You reach the city early in the morning and go to a hotel room arranged for freshening up. Take a bath, change into clean traditional clothes and have a hot cup of tea. You can also rest briefly if you wish. 8:00 AM – Breakfast. Enjoy a simple breakfast at the hotel or a nearby restaurant. Eat light so you are comfortable during the temple queue. Keep water, a cloth and a small bag ready. 9:00 AM – Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga darshan. We drive about 45 minutes to Verul. Join the queue and complete darshan. Men are generally required to remove shirts in the sanctum, so wear a clean dhoti or cloth. Spend a few minutes outside to see the carved red-stone shikhara. Photography inside the inner area is not allowed. Allow around 1.5 hours, longer on weekends. 11:00 AM – Ellora Caves. The caves are a short drive away. Head first to Cave 16, the Kailasa Temple, and walk around the courtyard and pillars. If time allows, step into Cave 15 and the Buddhist Cave 10 (Vishvakarma Cave). With only a day, you will see the highlights and not the entire site, so a guide helps you cover the best parts quickly. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays, so this option is not available on that day. 1:30 PM – Lunch. Eat at a restaurant near Ellora. Drink plenty of water, since you have been on the move since morning. 3:00 PM – Drive to Bibi Ka Maqbara. On the way back to the city, we stop at the 17th-century Bibi Ka Maqbara, often called the Taj of the Deccan. Walk through the garden and take photos near the main dome. Spend about an hour here. 4:30 PM – Short break or market stop. If time allows, we stop at a market for snacks and small souvenirs, or you can relax in the vehicle. 6:00 PM – Departure for Mumbai. We begin the return journey. Dinner is at a highway restaurant around 8:30 PM, and you reach Mumbai by around 1:00 AM, depending on traffic. Trip ends with the blessings of Grishneshwar in a single day.
Day 2: OPTION – 2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT Day 1: Mumbai to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki 6:30 AM – Pickup from Mumbai. Our driver picks you up from your agreed point. After a quick briefing we begin the drive through Thane and the Kasara region. 9:00 AM – Breakfast near Nashik. We stop for a proper breakfast. Try misal or poha with hot tea. Use the break to stretch and freshen up. 10:00 AM – Drive towards Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The road runs through open countryside with farms and small villages. Carry water and light snacks, and let the driver know if you need extra stops. 1:00 PM – Lunch and hotel check-in. After arrival, we have lunch at a trusted restaurant and check in to the hotel. You can rest for around an hour. 3:00 PM – Bibi Ka Maqbara. Visit the 17th-century mausoleum built by Prince Azam Shah for his mother, Dilras Banu Begum. Walk through the garden, see the dome and the jali work, and take photos along the central pathway. Spend about an hour here. 4:30 PM – Panchakki. This 17th-century water mill is linked with the Sufi saint Baba Shah Musafir. Water was brought through underground channels to power the stone mill. The pond and quiet complex make it a peaceful stop in the late afternoon. 6:00 PM – Return to hotel. Dinner is at leisure. Sleep early because Day 2 begins with darshan. Overnight stay in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Day 2: Grishneshwar Darshan, Ellora Caves and Return to Mumbai 8:00 AM – Breakfast and checkout. Have breakfast at the hotel, check out and load your luggage. We leave for Verul with traditional clothing handy. 9:00 AM – Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga darshan. Reach the temple and join the queue. The morning is calmer, so darshan is usually smoother. Men are generally asked to remove shirts in the sanctum. Photography is not allowed in the inner area. Take a few minutes to admire the carved shikhara and wall sculptures. Allow around 1.5 hours. 10:45 AM – Ellora Caves. Start with the Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), spending time around the courtyard, elephant sculptures and carved epic scenes. Then see Cave 15 and the Buddhist Cave 10. If you still have energy, visit one or two Jain caves at the far end. A guide adds a lot of value here. Ellora is closed on Tuesdays, so tell us your date early. 1:30 PM – Lunch. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant near Ellora. Rest, drink water and prepare for the long return drive. 2:30 PM – Departure for Mumbai. We drive back via Nashik with a tea break on the way. Keep a pillow and shawl handy, since the road takes around 6 to 7 hours. 5:30 PM – Dinner stop. We stop for an early dinner at a clean highway restaurant, which is also a good time to review your photos. 9:30 PM – Arrival in Mumbai. You are dropped at your preferred point, subject to traffic. We thank you for travelling with Trip Leads. Trip ends with beautiful memories and the blessings of Grishneshwar.
Day 3: OPTION – 3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS TOUR PACKAGE Use the same Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 itinerary given in the previous message (Day 1: Mumbai to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki; Day 2: Grishneshwar, Ellora and Daulatabad Fort; Day 3: Shopping and return to Mumbai).

Mumbai To Grishneshwar Trip — Travel Guide

Planning a Mumbai to Grishneshwar trip usually starts with one big question: how many days do I really need? The honest answer depends on your time, your age group and how much you want to see. At Trip Leads we have planned this route many times, so here is a clear, practical guide to help you choose.

The route and distance
Grishneshwar Temple is in Verul village, in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district of Maharashtra, the city many people still call Aurangabad. From Mumbai, the road passes through Thane, Nashik district and onwards to the city, roughly 330-350 km depending on route. Count on 6 to 7 hours of driving each way, including breakfast and tea breaks. The temple is about 30 km from the city centre, and Ellora Caves are almost next door.

Option 1: Grishneshwar 1 day trip from Mumbai
Many people search for a one-day plan because they can only spare a single leave. It is possible, but you need to understand how it works. Since the round trip is around 700 km, the journey is done overnight. You leave Mumbai at night, reach the city early morning, freshen up and head to the temple. After darshan you see the main caves at Ellora and then visit Bibi Ka Maqbara before heading back in the evening. It is tiring, so we suggest it for young, fit travellers and not for senior citizens or small children. If you can sleep in the vehicle, this is a good budget-friendly way to complete your yatra.

Option 2: 2 Day / 1 Night trip
This is the plan most families choose. You leave Mumbai in the morning, reach the city by afternoon, visit Bibi Ka Maqbara and Panchakki, and rest at the hotel. The next morning you go to Grishneshwar for darshan, then spend time at Ellora Caves before returning to Mumbai at night. You get a night’s sleep, the travel is split across two days, and the pace is gentle. It works well for couples, friends’ groups and families with school-going children.

Option 3: 3 Day / 2 Night tour package
If you want a relaxed and complete experience, this is the best choice. Day 2 is fully devoted to Grishneshwar, Ellora and Daulatabad Fort, and Day 3 gives you time for shopping and a daytime return. Senior citizens in particular benefit from this plan since there is no late-night driving and walking is spread out. It is also the right choice if you want to explore the three faiths represented at Ellora without a rushed schedule.

About the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga
Grishneshwar is counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is the last in the traditional order. The red volcanic-stone temple was rebuilt by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who restored many temples across India. Photography inside the inner sanctum is not allowed. Men are generally asked to remove their shirts before entering, so carry a clean cloth. Darshan queues are shorter in the early morning, which is why every Trip Leads option places the temple first.

Ellora Caves: do not miss them
Ellora was carved between roughly the 6th and 10th centuries and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Caves 1 to 12 are Buddhist, Caves 13 to 29 are Hindu and Caves 30 to 34 are Jain. The Kailasa Temple in Cave 16 is the star attraction, a temple carved from the top of a single rock. Allow at least three hours for a good visit, and remember that Ellora is closed on Tuesdays.

Other places on this route
Bibi Ka Maqbara is a 17th-century mausoleum often called the “Taj of the Deccan”. Panchakki is a 17th-century water-powered flour mill linked to the Sufi saint Baba Shah Musafir. Daulatabad Fort (Devgiri) is a beautifully preserved hill fort with the Chand Minar and the dark Andheri passage. It involves many steps, so we include it in Option 3 where there is enough time.

Best time to travel
October to February offers cool mornings and comfortable afternoons. July to September is green and misty but can be wet. April to June is hot, so plan outdoor visits for early morning and evening. Always check Tuesday closures for Ellora before fixing your date.

What to carry
Comfortable walking shoes, light cotton clothes, a cap, sunscreen, a water bottle, a clean dhoti or cloth for the sanctum, a rain jacket in monsoon and a valid photo ID.
