Know Before You Go

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How far is Kerala from Mumbai by road?
Kochi is roughly 1,350 to 1,450 km from Mumbai. The drive takes about two long days each way with night halts, depending on the route and weather. The full round trip with sightseeing is roughly 3,000 to 3,300 km.
Q2. Can we visit Kerala in less than eight days from Mumbai?
We do not recommend it by road. The round trip is about 3,000 km, which is unsafe and tiring in less than eight days. For a shorter trip, ask us about a one-way drive with a flight back from Kochi.
Q3. Is October a good time to visit Kerala?
October is still a rainy period, with showers, green hills and lower prices. Some activities may pause in heavy rain, and ghat roads can be slippery. December to February is the best time. We check the weather before your trip.
Q4. Is an Alleppey houseboat included?
It can be, as per your quotation. Houseboats usually cruise in the afternoon and anchor in the evening. We confirm the check-in time, meals and the type of boat before booking.
Q5. Which is the best option for senior citizens?
Option C. It spreads the driving over eleven days and adds a Thekkady stop, and Option B is a good alternative. Please tell us if anyone cannot manage long drives or boat rides.
Q6. Do we need permits for the cab in other states?
Outside vehicles usually pay a state entry or permit charge in Karnataka, Kerala and sometimes Tamil Nadu. We confirm the current rules and include the charges as per the quotation.
Q7. Can we eat vegetarian food throughout the trip?
Yes. Vegetarian meals are widely available in Karnataka, Kerala and Goa, including sadya-style meals and Udupi thalis. On the houseboat, tell us in advance so the cook can plan.

Mumbai To kerala Trip β€” Travel Guide

Mumbai to Kerala Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads

A road trip from Mumbai to Kerala is one of India’s classic long drives. This guide explains the distance, the route, the places worth your time and how to choose between an eight, ten or eleven day trip.

How far is Kerala from Mumbai?
Kochi is roughly 1,350 to 1,450 km from Mumbai by road, and Munnar and Alleppey are a little more or less depending on the route. The drive takes about two long days each way, with night halts. The full round trip, with sightseeing in Kerala, is roughly 3,000 to 3,300 km. The route and times depend on the weather, so we always plan the ghats in daylight.

Which road do we take?
Going south, we take the Mumbai Pune highway and NH48 through Satara, Kolhapur and Belagavi to Hubballi, then continue through Karnataka to Mysore. From Mysore, we cross into Kerala through Wayanad or via Tamil Nadu to Munnar. Coming back, we follow the coast road (NH66) via Kochi, Kozhikode, Kannur, Mangalore, Udupi and Goa. Some forest roads have night traffic bans, and the ghat sections need daylight. We check the current road condition before your trip.

Option A: An 8 day, 7 night trip
Days 1 and 2 are the drive to Mysore. Day 3 is the drive to Munnar. Day 4 is Munnar and the drive to Alleppey. Day 5 is Kochi. Days 6 to 8 are the return.

Option B: A 10 day, 9 night trip
Adds Mysore Palace, a night in Wayanad and a full day in Munnar. This is the one I suggest for most groups.

Option C: An 11 day, 10 night trip
Adds Thekkady and Periyar. It is the complete Kerala tour package from Mumbai.

The places worth your time

Mysore Palace and Chamundi Hills: The grand palace and a hilltop temple with city views.
Wayanad (Options B and C): A green hill district with lakes, dams, caves and forest. Pookode Lake and Banasura Sagar Dam are popular stops.
Munnar: Rolling tea estates, Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, the tea museum and the Top Station viewpoint.
Eravikulam National Park (Options B and C): A high-altitude park known for the Nilgiri tahr. Check closures and booking.
Thekkady and Periyar Tiger Reserve (Option C): A forest reserve with a lake boat ride and spice plantations.
Alleppey backwaters: A houseboat cruise through canals and paddy fields.
Kochi and Fort Kochi: Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry, Jew Town and a Kathakali performance.
Udupi Sri Krishna Matha: A famous temple on the way back.
Mangalore and Goa: Night halts on the return, with a beach or temple visit.

About the houseboat
Houseboats in Alleppey usually cruise in the afternoon and anchor in the evening, and they do not run late at night. Check-in and check-out times vary. Choose a licensed houseboat, confirm what meals are included and keep valuables minimal. We arrange it according to your quotation.

What to eat
Try appam with stew, puttu and kadala curry, Kerala parotta, fish curry meals, karimeen pollichathu, banana chips and payasam. In Karnataka, have filter coffee, dosa and Mysore pak. Vegetarian food is widely available.

Shopping
Kerala is known for spices, tea, coffee, cashew nuts, banana chips, coir products and handicrafts. Mysore is known for silk, sandalwood and incense. Compare quality and prices, and buy spices and tea from reputed shops.

Best time to visit
December to February is the most comfortable. October and November still have rain, and June to August is heavy monsoon. Avoid Christmas, New Year and the Sabarimala season if you want a quiet trip.

Which car for which group?
Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on the highway, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups.

Where to stay
Mysore, Wayanad, Munnar, Thekkady and Kochi have stays at every budget, from homestays to resorts. Rooms fill up fast on weekends, in Dasara and in December, so book early.

Practical tips
Start early, drive the ghats in daylight, carry a rain jacket, wear shoes with good grip, keep your photo ID handy and avoid swimming in rivers and waterfalls after rain.
