Know Before You Go

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the distance from Mumbai to Pune by road, and how long does the drive take?
Pune is about 150 km from Mumbai, and the drive normally takes three to three and a half hours via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Friday and Sunday evenings can add an hour or more at the Ghat section and the city entry.
Q2. Is a Mumbai to Pune one day trip by cab possible, and what can I cover?
Yes. With a 6:00 AM start, you can cover Shaniwar Wada, Dagdusheth Ganpati, the Kelkar Museum and the Aga Khan Palace, and start back by 4:30 PM. For Sinhagad and Khadakwasla, the 2 day plan is more comfortable.
Q3. How much is the Mumbai-Pune Expressway toll, and is it included in the package?
Toll rates are set by the authorities and can change, so we confirm the current amount when we finalise your quotation. Tolls and parking are included in the cab package as per the plan.
Q4. What is the best time to visit Pune from Mumbai, and which days should I avoid?
October to February is the most comfortable. Avoid Friday evening departures and Sunday evening returns when you can, as the Expressway is busiest then. Ganeshotsav brings road closures in Pune’s old city.
Q5. Is the Aga Khan Palace in Pune worth visiting on a short trip from Mumbai?
Yes, especially if you enjoy history. The palace has a Gandhi memorial, a small museum and a calm garden, and usually takes one to one and a half hours. It fits well into an afternoon after the old-city sights.
Q6. Can I visit Sinhagad Fort in the same trip as Pune city sightseeing?
Yes, in the 2 day and 3 day plans. Sinhagad is about 30 km from the city centre and needs half a day, so we keep it on its own morning. A weekday is calmer, and monsoon weekends are very crowded.
Q7. Is a cab better than a train or bus for a Mumbai to Pune sightseeing trip?
A cab gives you door-to-door travel and flexible stops, which matter in Pune because the sights are spread out and the old city has limited parking. Trains and buses are cheaper, but you will need local transport at each stop. We can plan either way.

Mumbai To Pune Trip — Travel Guide

Planning a Mumbai to Pune Trip? A Practical Guide for 1, 2 and 3 Days

If you have searched “Mumbai to Pune trip” and found only bus timings and long lists of places, this guide is for you. Pune is one of the easiest cities to reach from Mumbai, and one of the most rewarding to explore, but it is also a busy city where a good plan makes a big difference. As a travel planner at Trip Leads, I have written this guide to help you plan with confidence.

The route and the distance

Pune is about 150 km from Mumbai, and the drive normally takes three to three and a half hours via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which is toll-based. The Khopoli Ghat section and the city entry near Wakad or Hinjewadi can slow down on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings. We recommend leaving by 6:00 AM and planning the return before the evening rush or after it. The old Mumbai-Pune highway is an alternative, but it is slower.

Option A: A 1 day trip

A Mumbai to Pune 1 day trip works best when it stays in the city. Start with Shaniwar Wada when it is quiet and cool, then visit Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati and the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, have lunch, and spend the afternoon at the Aga Khan Palace. The return starts by 4:30 PM. If you want to include Sinhagad, I suggest the 2 day plan.

Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip

Day 1 covers the heritage side of Pune in a relaxed order, with Lal Mahal and the Pataleshwar Cave Temple if time allows. Day 2 goes outside the city: Sinhagad Fort in the morning, Khadakwasla Dam for the backwaters and snacks, and the Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden before the return to Mumbai.

Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip

The third day is for Dehu and Alandi, about 30 km and 25 km from Pune. You take darshan at the Tukaram Maharaj Gatha Mandir, visit Bhandara Dongar if the weather allows, and finish with the Sanjeevan Samadhi Mandir of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj at Alandi. It is a calm, spiritual day that balances the city sights.

The places worth your time

Shaniwar Wada: The ruined fortress-palace of the Peshwas, with its massive gates and courtyards. Go early for the quiet and the shade.

Lal Mahal: A reconstructed palace linked with the childhood of Shivaji Maharaj and Jijabai. A short stop near Shaniwar Wada.

Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple: One of the most famous Ganesh temples in India, and the face of Pune’s Ganeshotsav. Weekday mornings have the shortest queue.

Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: A private museum with a large and unusual collection of everyday objects, instruments, lamps and textiles from across India.

Aga Khan Palace: A palace built in 1892 where Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi were detained during the freedom struggle. It now holds a memorial and a peaceful garden.

Pataleshwar Cave Temple: An ancient rock-cut Shiva temple in the heart of the city, small and calm.

Sinhagad Fort: A hill fort in the Sahyadri, famous for Tanaji Malusare’s battle in 1670. Views, cool air and local snacks at the top make it a popular half-day trip.

Khadakwasla Dam: A large reservoir on the Mutha river with a promenade, backwaters and roadside stalls. Good for a tea break.

Pune-Okayama Friendship Garden: A Japanese-style garden with walkways and water features, a relaxed place for families.

Dehu (Option C): The village of Sant Tukaram Maharaj, with the Gatha Mandir on the Indrayani river and the quiet hill of Bhandara Dongar.

Alandi (Option C): The resting place of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj, with the Samadhi Mandir and the Ajanvruksh.

Best time to visit Pune

October to February is the most comfortable, with cool mornings and clear skies. Monsoon is lovely at Sinhagad and Khadakwasla, but conditions can be misty and slippery. Summer is hot, so keep outdoor walks to the morning. Ganeshotsav and major festival weekends bring crowds and traffic closures, so check before you book.

What to eat

Pune has a food culture of its own. Try misal pav, sabudana khichdi, bhakarwadi, kothimbir vadi, Maharashtrian thalis, and shrikhand or jalebi. Sinhagad is famous for pithla-bhakri, kanda bhaji and curd at the top. The Peth area has well-known snack and sweet shops. Cafes along the road to Khadakwasla are good for a relaxed break.

Where to stay

Pune has hotels in every range, from budget lodges near the railway station to business hotels in Koregaon Park, Shivajinagar and Deccan. For old-city sightseeing, a central stay saves time. For Dehu and Alandi, you can also stay near Pimpri Chinchwad. Tell us your budget and group size, and we will suggest options.

Practical tips from the road

Start early, avoid the Friday evening and Sunday evening Expressway rush, and carry a light jacket for Sinhagad. Wear comfortable shoes for the wadas and the fort. Use only official counters for tickets, and ask us about closing days before you plan. If anyone has difficulty with steps, tell us in advance, and we will adjust the plan.

Which option should you choose?

For a quick, complete city tour, choose the 1 day trip. For a calm night with the fort and the lake, choose the 2 day trip. For the added Dehu and Alandi darshan, choose the 3 day tour package. If you cannot decide, tell us your group size, ages and interests, and we will recommend what fits best.
