Know Before You Go

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How far are Ujjain and Omkareshwar from Mumbai by road?
Ujjain is roughly 750 to 800 km from Mumbai and Omkareshwar roughly 650 to 680 km. Omkareshwar to Ujjain is about 140 km. Drive times depend on the route and traffic
Q2. Can we visit Ujjain and Omkareshwar in two or three days from Mumbai?
We do not recommend it. The round trip is about 1,500 to 1,600 km, which is unsafe and tiring in less than four days. The 4 day option is the shortest plan we offer.
Q3. Do we need to book the Bhasma aarti in advance?
Yes. The Bhasma aarti is held before dawn, and entry is by advance online booking with strict rules. Booking charges are not included in the package. We help you check the current process and slots when your trip is finalised.
Q4. What are the Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar temple timings?
Both temples generally open in the early morning and stay open until late evening. Timings, aarti schedules, darshan types and rules can change on Mondays, Shravan and festival days, so we confirm them when your trip is finalised.
Q5. What is the best time to visit?
October to February is the most comfortable. The monsoon is green but slippery, and summers are very hot. Avoid Mondays, Shravan, Mahashivratri and long weekends if you want a calmer darshan.
Q6. Which is the best option for senior citizens?
Option B or Option C. Both give you an overnight stay at Omkareshwar, a slower pace and fewer rushed mornings. Option C is the most relaxed. The Omkareshwar parikrama and the temple steps need some walking, so please tell us if anyone cannot manage it.
Q7. Where can I buy Maheshwari sarees, prasad and pooja items?
Maheshwar sells Maheshwari sarees and handloom items. The lanes near the temples in Ujjain and Omkareshwar sell rudraksha, small lingams, bel leaves, malas and pooja items. Buy from established shops and compare prices before you pay.

Mumbai To Ujjain Omkareshwar Trip — Travel Guide

Mumbai to Ujjain Omkareshwar Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads

Ujjain and Omkareshwar are two of the most important Jyotirlinga destinations in central India, and they are close enough to be visited together. This guide explains the distance, the route, the places worth your time and how to choose between a four, five or six day trip.

How far are Ujjain and Omkareshwar from Mumbai?
Indore is roughly 590 km from Mumbai, Omkareshwar is roughly 650 to 680 km, and Ujjain is roughly 750 to 800 km, depending on your pickup point and the route. Indore to Omkareshwar is about 75 to 80 km, Indore to Ujjain about 55 km, and Omkareshwar to Ujjain about 140 km. The drive from Mumbai to Indore takes roughly ten to eleven hours with stops, and more on weekends, festival days and in the monsoon. We always plan the journey in two parts.

Which road do we take?
We take the Mumbai Agra highway through Nashik, Malegaon, Dhule, Shirpur and Sendhwa to Indore. This route has the Sendhwa ghat section and some busy stretches, so we check the current condition with our drivers before your trip.

Option A: A 4 day, 3 night trip
Day 1 is the drive to Indore. Day 2 is Omkareshwar and the drive to Ujjain. Day 3 is Mahakaleshwar and the drive to Dhule. Day 4 is the drive to Mumbai.

Option B: A 5 day, 4 night trip
Day 1 is Indore. Day 2 is Omkareshwar, with a night there. Day 3 is the drive to Ujjain. Day 4 is Mahakaleshwar and the temples of Ujjain, then the drive to Dhule. Day 5 is the return. This is the one I suggest for families.

Option C: A 6 day, 5 night trip
Omkareshwar, Maheshwar, two nights in Ujjain and a stop in Indore. It is the complete Ujjain Omkareshwar tour package from Mumbai.

The places worth your time

Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain: A Jyotirlinga on the Shipra, known for its Bhasma aarti and the Mahakal Lok corridor around it.
Kal Bhairav Temple, Ujjain: The guardian temple of Ujjain, with a well-known tradition of offerings.
Harsiddhi Temple: A Shakti shrine near Mahakaleshwar, known for its two tall lamp towers.
Ram Ghat, Ujjain: The main ghat on the Shipra, atmospheric at the evening aarti.
Sandipani Ashram: The place associated with the guru of Krishna and Balarama.
Mangalnath Temple: A temple linked with the planet Mars in tradition.
Vedh Shala (Jantar Mantar), Ujjain: An old observatory on the Tropic of Cancer.
Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, Mandhata island: The main temple, on the island in the Narmada.
Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) Temple: The temple on the south bank, across from the island.
Omkareshwar parikrama: A walk around the island, with river views and smaller temples.
Maheshwar (Option C): A calm town on the Narmada with the Ahilya Fort and its ghats, and Maheshwari sarees.
Indore (Options A, B and C): The food capital of Madhya Pradesh, with Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace and Khajrana Ganesh Temple.

About darshan at Mahakaleshwar
Lines can be short on weekday mornings and very long on Mondays, Shravan, Mahashivratri and festival days. The Bhasma aarti is held before dawn and needs advance online booking, and permissions and dress rules are strict. Phones and bags are generally not allowed inside the temple. A paid quicker darshan may be available. Dress modestly, and confirm the current rules about footwear and clothing. We plan your darshan for the quietest slot possible.

About Omkareshwar
Omkareshwar has two main temple areas, and you can cross to the island by a bridge or by boat. The parikrama path has steps and uneven stretches, so wear shoes you can remove easily. If you plan to bathe in the Narmada, check the water level and safety first, because currents can be strong, especially after rain.

What to eat
Try Indori poha and jalebi, sabudana khichdi, dal bafla, bhutte ka kees and Sarafa chaat in Indore. In Ujjain, look for kachori and mawa sweets near the temple. Food near the temples is simple and vegetarian.

Shopping
Maheshwari sarees, Bagh prints, Indore namkeen, rudraksha, small Shiva lingams, bel leaves and prasad items are popular. Buy from established shops and compare prices before you pay.

Best time to visit
October to February has the most pleasant weather. The monsoon is green but slippery, and summers are very hot. Avoid Mondays, Shravan and Mahashivratri unless they are the purpose of your trip.

Which car for which group?
Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on the highway, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups.

Where to stay
Indore and Ujjain have hotels at every budget, and Ujjain has dharamshalas near the temple. Omkareshwar has simple lodges, dharamshalas and a few hotels. Rooms fill up quickly on Mondays, festival days and long weekends, so book early.

Practical tips
Start early, carry water and a cap, wear footwear that is easy to remove, keep valuables minimal, keep your photo ID handy and follow the temple rules.
