Know Before You Go
- Carry a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar/PAN/Passport/DL) for every traveller — hotels and some checkpoints ask for it.
- Pack according to Maharashtra's season — check the local weather a few days before departure and pack accordingly.
- Keep your booking voucher and driver/vehicle details handy (sent by Tripleads after confirmation).
- Please be ready at the pickup point 10–15 minutes before the scheduled time to keep the itinerary on track.
- Carry some cash for personal expenses, tips and anything not covered under Inclusions — card/UPI acceptance can be patchy in remote areas.
- Mobile network can be weak in ghats, valleys and remote stretches of the route — inform family of your rough schedule in advance.
- Hill/high-altitude routes can cause motion sickness or breathlessness — carry basic medication and inform the driver if you need frequent stops.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How far is Lonavala from Nashik by road?
Roughly 200 to 230 km. The drive takes about four to five hours, depending on the route and traffic.
Q2. Can we visit Lonavala in one day from Nashik?
Yes, but it is a very long day. If you leave by 5:00 am and start back by about 3:00 pm, you can see two or three places. For a relaxed pace, or to add Lohagad and Pawna Lake, choose the 2 or 3 day option
Q3. Is Lonavala worth visiting after the monsoon?
Yes. In October the hills are still green, the crowds are lighter, and the weather is pleasant, but the waterfalls and Bhushi Dam flow are smaller than in July and August. If you want to see the falls in full flow, the monsoon is the time, but with more crowds and more risk.
Q4. Is it safe to visit the waterfalls and dams?
Be careful. Fast water, slippery rocks and cliff edges are risks, and some spots are closed in heavy rain. We follow local rules and warning signs, and we do not stop at places that are restricted or unsafe.
Q5. Can we go during Navratri?
Yes, but the Ekvira Devi temple at Karla is very crowded, and the roads near it can be jammed. If you want the festival atmosphere, tell us early. For a calm trip, choose another week.
Q6. Can we add Mumbai, Pune or Mahabaleshwar?
Yes, as a longer custom plan. Pune and Mumbai are close to Lonavala, and Mahabaleshwar needs an extra night. Tell us your dates and the places you want, and we will quote a route.
Q7. Which is the best option for senior citizens?
Option B. It gives a night’s rest in Lonavala, and keeps the stops short. Bhaja Caves and Lohagad have steps, so please tell us if anyone cannot manage them, and we will choose the stops accordingly

Nashik To Lonavala Trip — Travel Guide
Nashik to Lonavala Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads
Lonavala is one of the easiest hill station trips from Nashik. This guide explains the distance, the route, the places worth your time and how to choose between a one, two or three day trip.
How far is Lonavala from Nashik?
Lonavala is roughly 200 to 230 km from Nashik, depending on the route. The drive takes about four to five hours. Sangamner is about 80 km from Nashik, and Narayangaon is about 150 km. Weekend and holiday traffic near Lonavala, Khandala and the expressway can add a lot of time, so start early.
Which road do we take?
We usually take the Nashik, Sinnar, Sangamner, Narayangaon and Pune road, then the old Mumbai–Pune highway or the expressway to Lonavala, or the Nashik, Igatpuri, Kasara and Mumbai side route, depending on the day and traffic. We check the current road condition, tolls and ghat status with our drivers before your trip.
Option A: A 1 day trip
A Nashik to Lonavala one day trip works if you leave by 5:00 am. See Karla Caves, Tiger’s Point and a viewpoint, buy some chikki and start back by about 3:00 pm. You will return in the evening.
Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip
Day 1 covers the drive, Karla and Bhaja Caves, Ekvira Devi darshan and a lake or viewpoint evening, with a night in Lonavala. Day 2 covers Tiger’s Point, Bhushi Dam, chikki shopping and the return. This is the one I suggest for families.
Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip
Day 1 is the drive, Karla and Bhaja Caves and a lake evening. Day 2 is Lohagad Fort, Pawna Lake and a sunset viewpoint. Day 3 is Tiger’s Point, Khandala, shopping and the return.
The places worth your time
Tiger’s Point (Lion’s Point): A cliff viewpoint with a valley view, busy at weekends and best in the morning.
Bhushi Dam: A dam known for its flow over the steps in the monsoon, much quieter after the rains.
Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves: Ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves from about the 2nd century BCE, with large chaitya halls. Check ticket, timing and shoe rules.
Ekvira Devi Temple, Karla: A well known devi temple near the caves, very crowded during Navratri.
Lohagad and Visapur Forts (Option C): Hill forts near Malavli, with steps and an easy climb at Lohagad. Not suitable for anyone who cannot manage steps.
Pawna Lake (Option C): A calm lake with camping and sunset views. Check camping and entry rules.
Tungarli Lake and Lonavala Lake: Quiet lakes for an easy evening walk.
Rajmachi Point and Duke’s Nose (Khandala): Viewpoints on the ghat road, best in clear weather.
Ryewood Park, wax museum and other attractions: Short family stops if time allows.
Shopping: Chikki, fudge, jaggery sweets and cashew products, at established shops such as those on Mumbai–Pune Road.
About safety at falls, dams and viewpoints
Tourist deaths have occurred at waterfalls and dams in the monsoon, and fast water, slippery rocks and cliff edges are real risks. Please follow all warning signs and local rules, do not swim or climb beyond barriers, and keep children and elders under close watch. Some spots are closed in heavy rain, and we will plan around this.
About darshan at Ekvira Devi
The temple gets heavy crowds during Navratri, Chaitra and on weekends. Wear simple traditional clothing, and expect rules on phones, bags and footwear. Please confirm current timings and any queue system before the trip.
What to eat
Try chikki, fudge, vada pav, corn bhajiya, roasted bhutta, maggi and tea at the viewpoints, and a simple Maharashtrian thali. Pick busy, clean places, and carry water.
Best time to visit
October to February is the most comfortable. The monsoon is the greenest but also the most crowded and the most hazardous. Avoid weekends, long weekends and Diwali week for a quieter visit.
Which car for which group?
Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on the highway, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups. Large vehicles can face parking and entry limits at some viewpoints and forts, and we confirm this when your trip is finalised.
Where to stay
Lonavala has hotels, resorts and homestays at every budget. Khandala and Pawna Lake have more resort and camping options. Rooms fill up quickly and rates rise on weekends, festival days and long weekends, so book early.
Practical tips
Start early, carry water and a cap, wear shoes with good grip, keep valuables close, follow the warning signs and avoid peak weekend crowds.
