Pune To Kaas Pathar Trip — Travel Guide

Pune to Kaas Pathar Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads

Kaas Plateau is one of the most beautiful short trips from Pune in the post-monsoon season, and it is easy to combine with Satara’s waterfalls and forts. This guide explains the distance, the route, the flower season and how to choose between a one, two or three day trip.

How far is Kaas Pathar from Pune?
Kaas is about 130 to 140 km from Pune. The drive takes roughly three to three and a half hours via the Pune Bengaluru highway to Satara, then a hill road of about 25 km to the plateau. Traffic at the Khambatki ghat and on weekends can add time, so start early.

When do the flowers bloom?
The flower season is generally from late August to early October, with the peak in mid-September to the end of September. The dates change every year with the rains, and the flowers bloom in waves, so the colours differ from week to week. Outside this period, the plateau is mostly dry grass. Please check the current bloom status before you plan.

Option A: A 1 day trip
A Pune to Kaas Pathar one day trip works if you leave by 5:30 am. Walk the plateau in the morning, visit Kaas Lake, have lunch and start back by 3:30 pm. You will be back in Pune in the evening.

Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip
Day 1 covers Kaas Plateau, Kaas Lake and the Vajrai waterfall, with a night in Satara. Day 2 covers Sajjangad and Thoseghar before the return. This Pune to Kaas Pathar 2 days trip is the one I suggest for families.

Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip
Day 1 is Kaas. Day 2 is Satara’s sights and the drive to Mahabaleshwar. Day 3 is Mahabaleshwar’s viewpoints and a return via Panchgani. It is the complete Kaas tour package from Pune.

The places worth your time

Kaas Plateau: A UNESCO World Heritage plateau known for its seasonal wildflowers, with marked walking paths.
Kaas Lake: A calm lake near the plateau, good for a short stop and photographs.
Vajrai (Bhambavli) Waterfall: A tall, multi-tier waterfall in the hills near Kaas, best seen when there is good water.
Thoseghar Waterfalls: A group of waterfalls with viewing platforms, about 25 km from Satara.
Sajjangad: A fort and the samadhi place of Samarth Ramdas Swami, on a hill near Satara.
Ajinkyatara Fort: A hill fort that overlooks Satara city. Check the access road before visiting.
Mahabaleshwar (Option C): A hill station with viewpoints such as Arthur’s Seat, Venna Lake and old temples.
Panchgani Table Land (Option C): A large flat plateau on the way back to Pune.

About visiting Kaas
Visitor numbers are limited and entry is usually by online slot booking, so booking early is important in the season. Walking is allowed only on the marked paths, and plucking flowers, stepping into the beds, plastic and loud music are not permitted. The flowers open best in sunshine, so a clear day is better than a cloudy one. Rules, timings and fees are set by the forest authorities and can change, so we confirm them when your trip is finalised.

What to eat
Try misal pav, jwari bhakri with pithla or zunka, and the famous Satara kandi pede. Non-vegetarian meals are available in Satara town. Food at Kaas itself is limited, so plan your meals.

Shopping
Satara is known for kandi pede. Mahabaleshwar sells strawberry products when in season, local jams, honey, chikki, and handmade chappals. Compare quality and price before you buy.

Best time to visit
For flowers, late August to early October, and mostly on weekdays. For the rest of the circuit, October to February is the most comfortable. The monsoon is green but slippery, and summers are hot and dry.

Which car for which group?
Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on the highway, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups.

Where to stay
Satara has hotels in every budget. Kaas has a few homestays and resorts nearby, but they fill up in the flower season. Mahabaleshwar has hotels from budget to luxury. Book early for weekends.

Practical tips
Start early, carry water and a cap, wear shoes with good grip, avoid plastic, stay on the marked paths and follow the forest rules.
