Pune To Kolhapur Trip — Travel Guide

Pune to Kolhapur Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads

Kolhapur is one of the easiest and most rewarding long weekend trips from Pune. The road is good, the city is full of things to see and the food is memorable. This guide explains the distance, the route, the places worth your time and how to choose between a one, two or three day trip.

How far is Kolhapur from Pune?
Kolhapur is about 230 to 240 km from Pune. The drive takes roughly four and a half to five hours on the Pune Bengaluru highway, passing Satara and Karad. Traffic near Satara and Karad can add time, especially on weekends and festival days, so start early.

Option A: A 1 day trip
A Pune to Kolhapur one day trip works if you leave by 4:30 am. Take Mahalaxmi darshan in the morning, visit the New Palace and Rankala Lake, have a proper lunch and start back by 4:00 pm. You will be back in Pune late at night. It is a good option when you only want darshan and a short look at the city.

Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip
Day 1 covers the drive, an evening darshan and Rankala Lake at sunset. Day 2 covers Jyotiba and Panhala Fort before the return. This Pune to Kolhapur 2 days trip is the one I suggest for families.

Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip
Day 1 is the city. Day 2 is Jyotiba, Panhala and shopping. Day 3 is Narsobawadi and Khidrapur before the return. It is the complete Kolhapur tour package from Pune.

The places worth your time

Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) Temple: A Shakti Peetha with a black stone idol, in the old city. Evening aarti is especially atmospheric.
New Palace and Chhatrapati Shahu Museum: A grand 19th-century palace with a museum on the Kolhapur royal family.
Rankala Lake: A lakeside spot, good for a sunset walk and local snacks.
Panhala Fort: A large hill fort with Teen Darwaza, Sajja Kothi and Andhar Bavdi, and a view over the Sahyadri hills.
Jyotiba Temple (Wadi Ratnagiri): A hilltop temple north of the city, popular with devotees, with a scenic road.
Narsobawadi: A Datta pilgrimage site on the banks of the Krishna river.
Khidrapur, Kopeshwar Temple: An ancient stone temple known for its detailed carvings.
Khasbag Maidan: A famous wrestling arena, tied to Kolhapur’s wrestling tradition.

About Mahalaxmi Temple
The temple is believed to date back to the Chalukya period. Devotees usually queue early, and weekends, Tuesdays and Fridays, and festival days such as Navratri, are the busiest. Dress modestly, and confirm the current rules about phones, bags and footwear. We plan your darshan for the quietest slot possible.

Panhala Fort in brief
The fort sits on a plateau about 20 km from the city. Teen Darwaza is the impressive triple gate, Sajja Kothi is a historic structure on the fort and Andhar Bavdi is a stepped well. Plan about two hours, and wear shoes with good grip.

What to eat in Kolhapur
Try misal pav, and if you eat non-vegetarian, the famous tambda and pandhra rassa. Kolhapuri thecha is a powerful side. For sweets, look for local favourites in the old city. Spice levels are real, so ask for a milder version if you are not used to it.

Shopping: Kolhapuri chappal
Kolhapur is famous for handmade leather chappals. Buy from reputable shops in the old city, check the stitching and fit, and compare quality before you buy.

Best time to visit
October to February has the most pleasant weather. The monsoon is green and misty but slippery. Summers are hot and humid. Weekends are busier than weekdays.

Which car for which group?
Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on the highway, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups.

Where to stay
Kolhapur has hotels in every budget, many near the old city and the temple. Rooms fill up on festival days and weekends, so book early.

Practical tips
Start early, carry water and a cap, wear comfortable shoes, keep valuables minimal and follow the temple rules.
