Q2. Is a one day trip from Pune to Mumbai possible?
Yes. A one day Mumbai Darshan works if you leave by 5:30 AM and focus on South Mumbai. It is a long day, so a 2 day trip is more relaxed, especially for families and elders.
Q3. What is the best time to visit Mumbai?
October to February offers pleasant weather and clearer skies. Summer is hot and humid, and monsoon brings heavy rain, waterlogging and the suspension of the Elephanta ferry.
Q4. What are the best places to visit in Mumbai?
Popular places include the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty, CSMT, Elephanta Caves, Haji Ali Dargah, Siddhivinayak Temple, Bandra Bandstand, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the Kanheri Caves.
Q5. Are the Elephanta Caves open every day?
The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays, and ferry services depend on weather and season. In monsoon the ferry usually stops. We plan your itinerary around these conditions.
Q6. Which option should I choose: 1 day, 2 days or 3 days?
Choose 1 day for a quick Mumbai Darshan, 2 days for a relaxed weekend with the ferry ride, and 3 days if you want to include temples, Bandra and the national park. If you are unsure, share your group details and we will suggest the best fit.
Q7. What is included in the package price?

Pune To Mumbai Trip — Travel Guide

Planning a Pune to Mumbai Trip? A Practical Guide for 1, 2 and 3 Days

Pune and Mumbai are linked by one of the best-known expressways in India, and thousands of people travel between the two cities every day. But the people who go for sightseeing, for fun and not for work, face a different set of questions. How early should you leave? Which places are worth the traffic? How many days do you really need? As a travel planner at Trip Leads, I have written this guide to answer these questions in plain language.

The route and the distance

The distance from Pune to Mumbai is roughly 150 km to the outskirts, and the drive takes around three to three and a half hours via the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Reaching South Mumbai, where most major attractions are, can take another hour or more depending on traffic. The expressway is smooth and fast, with scenic ghat sections near Lonavala and Khandala, but toll charges apply. Leaving Pune around 5:30 to 6:00 AM helps you reach Mumbai before the morning rush.

Option A: A 1 day trip from Pune

A Pune to Mumbai one day trip works well if you start early and stay focused on South Mumbai. You can see the Gateway of India, the Colaba area, the heritage buildings near CSMT, Marine Drive and Girgaum Chowpatty, and still have time for a meal and a snack stop. It is a long day, with about seven hours on the road, so it suits energetic travellers. Families with small children or elders may prefer a 2 day option.

Option B: A 2 day, 1 night trip

A 2 day trip from Pune to Mumbai gives you time to breathe. On day one, you see the classic South Mumbai circuit, and enjoy the sunset at Marine Drive, followed by street food at Chowpatty. On day two, you take an early ferry to Elephanta Caves, or visit a temple and a landmark such as Haji Ali, before the return drive. The overnight stay makes the second day lighter.

Option C: A 3 day, 2 night trip

With three days, you can see Mumbai properly. Day one covers South Mumbai. Day two covers Elephanta Caves, Haji Ali, the Siddhivinayak Temple and the Mahalaxmi area. Day three takes you to Sanjay Gandhi National Park and the ancient Kanheri Caves, followed by Bandra's seaside and a drive over the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. This option is ideal for people who want to see more than the standard tourist circuit.

The places worth your time

Gateway of India and Colaba: The classic starting point of any Mumbai trip, a grand arch by the harbour, with the famous Taj Mahal Palace hotel across the road and the lively Colaba Causeway market nearby.

CSMT and the Heritage District: The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a UNESCO-listed railway station and a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture. Nearby you also find the museum, the old courts and other heritage buildings. A walk or a drive-by is rewarding.

Marine Drive and Girgaum Chowpatty: A long, curved sea promenade that is best at sunset. Chowpatty beach nearby is famous for its bhel puri, pav bhaji and other street snacks.

Elephanta Caves: An island of rock-cut cave temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, reached by a ferry ride from the Gateway of India. The sculptures are remarkable. The caves are closed on Mondays, and ferry services depend on weather, so please check.

Haji Ali Dargah: A well-known shrine standing in the sea, reached by a long causeway that is only walkable at low tide. Tide timing matters, so we plan accordingly.

Siddhivinayak Temple: One of the most visited Ganesh temples in Mumbai, with long queues, especially on Tuesdays and festival days. We recommend an early or off-peak visit.

Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat viewpoint: A unique open-air laundry that can be viewed from a nearby bridge. A short stop.

Bandra Bandstand and Mount Mary Church: A seaside promenade popular with locals, with film-star homes in the background and a well-known hilltop church nearby. A good place for an evening walk.

Bandra-Worli Sea Link: A modern cable-stayed bridge over the Arabian Sea. We drive across for views and photographs.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri Caves: A large forest within the city, home to ancient Buddhist caves cut into the rock. A calm, green contrast to the rest of Mumbai. Check the park's weekly closing day before your visit.

Best time to visit Mumbai

October to February is the best period for sightseeing, with pleasant weather and clearer skies. March to May is hot and humid, though early mornings and evenings are manageable. Monsoon (June to September) is dramatic, but heavy rain can cause waterlogging, and the Elephanta ferry typically stops. Festival days like Ganesh Chaturthi bring huge crowds and special traffic arrangements, so please check dates.

What to eat

Mumbai is a food lover's city. Try vada pav, pav bhaji, bhel puri, sev puri, Bombay sandwiches, Irani cafe chai with bun maska, and fresh seafood at one of the coastal restaurants. Vegetarians will find plenty of choices, and fish lovers will be happy too. For the safest street food experience, choose busy stalls with fresh preparation.

Where to stay

Mumbai has hotels at every budget, from simple lodges to luxury properties. For sightseeing, staying in or near South Mumbai or Bandra saves time. Rooms tend to be smaller and prices higher than in Pune, so book early. Tell us your budget and group size, and we suggest suitable options.

Practical tips from the road

Start early, because every hour after 9 AM adds traffic. Carry some cash for parking, entry fees and street food. Keep valuables and phones secure in crowded places. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Carry a photo ID, as some monuments require it. Check weekly closing days and tide timings, and keep a little flexibility in your plan.

Which option should you choose?

If you have a single day and good energy, choose the 1 day trip. If you want a relaxed weekend with a ferry ride, choose the 2 day trip. If you want to see more of Mumbai, including the national park and Bandra, choose the 3 day tour package. If you cannot decide, tell us your group size, ages and interests, and we will recommend what fits.

Book with Trip Leads
