Pune to Tarkarli and Malvan Trip: A Practical Guide by Trip Leads

Tarkarli and Malvan are among the most beautiful and least crowded parts of the Konkan coast, and they combine easily with Kunkeshwar, Devgad, Vijaydurg and Kolhapur. This guide explains the distance, the route, the main sights, the best season and how to choose between a three, four or five day trip.

How far is Tarkarli from Pune? Tarkarli is about 400 to 430 km from Pune. The drive takes roughly 8 to 9 hours via Satara, Kolhapur and one of the Western Ghats routes such as Phonda or Gaganbawda, then Kankavli and Malvan, and longer on weekends, holidays and in or just after the monsoon. Start early, ideally before 5:30 am.

Why not a one or two day trip? The distance is too long for a one day outing, and a two day plan would be almost all driving. The shortest plan we recommend is 3 days, with Day 2 as a full day in Tarkarli.

The places worth your time

Sindhudurg Fort (all options): An island sea fort built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, reached by a short ferry from the Malvan jetty. It has thick sea walls, old wells and a temple of Shivaji Maharaj.
Tarkarli Beach (all options): A long, clean white sand beach with calm shallow water, good for swimming at safe spots and for sunsets.
Snorkelling and scuba diving, Tarkarli (all options): Shallow reef diving in the Malvan Marine Sanctuary with certified operators, in the season.
Devbag Sangam and Tsunami Island (Options B and C): The meeting point of the Karli river and the sea, with a sandbar and a boat ride.
Rock Garden, Malvan, and Chivla Beach (Options A and B): A small garden above the sea, and a quiet rocky beach.
Rameshwar Temple, Achra (Option B): An old temple on the coast, with a calm village setting.
Kunkeshwar Temple, Devgad (Option C): A Shiva temple on the coast, called the "Konkan Kashi" by many pilgrims.
Devgad Beach and Vijaydurg Fort (Option C): A quiet beach and an old sea fort of the Maratha Navy, with a walk along the walls and views over the creek.
Mahalaxmi Temple, Kolhapur (Option C): One of the revered Shakti Peethas, on the way back to Pune.

About visiting the coast The sea around Malvan has rocks, currents and sudden changes in the weather. Please follow the rules: swim only at safe spots and where locals advise, do not enter the sea after dark, use only certified water sport and scuba operators, wear a life jacket on boats, do not litter and do not climb on the fort walls. Fort ferries and water sports run only in the season and depend on the tide and the weather. Timings, fees and rules can change. We confirm them when your trip is finalised.

What to eat Try the Malvani fish thali, prawn curry, kombdi vade and solkadhi, and Malvani khaja and cashews to take home. Vegetarians can have vade, usal, ghavan and modak. Plan your meals, because options are limited in the smaller villages.

Shopping Malvan has local shops selling Malvani masala, cashews, kokum, dried fish (for those who want it), Malvani khaja, handicrafts and coconut items. Buy only what you need, and carry your garbage back.

Best time to visit November to February is the most comfortable. October and March are good too, but the sea and the activity timings depend on the year. The monsoon is beautiful but the sea is unsafe and water sports stop, and April and May are hot and humid.

Which car for which group? Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on long drives, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups. For the narrow lanes in Tarkarli village, we advise smaller vehicles where possible.

Where to stay There are beach resorts, MTDC cottages, homestays and guesthouses in Tarkarli, Devbag and Malvan, and hotels in Devgad and Kolhapur for Option C. Rooms fill up on weekends, holiday dates and the peak season, so book early.

Practical tips Start early on driving days, carry water, a hat and sunscreen, wear shoes with good grip, avoid plastic, use only licensed boats and operators and follow the beach and fort rules.
