One Day Trip From Dehradun Travel Guide

One Day Trip from Dehradun: Which One to Choose? Dehradun sits in the Doon valley with the Shivalik hills on one side, the Himalayan foothills on the other and two great rivers close by. That gives you a lot of choice for a one day trip. This guide explains the distances, what each trip covers and how to choose the right one for your group. Distances from Dehradun Mussoorie is about 35 km, around one to one and a half hours. Rishikesh is about 45 km, around one and a half hours. Haridwar is about 55 km, around one and a half hours. Dhanaulti is about 60 km, around two hours. Sahastradhara is about 11 km and Robber’s Cave about 8 km from the city centre. Option A: A Mussoorie day trip Start by 8:00 am to beat the road traffic. Mall Road is good for breakfast and a stroll. Gun Hill is a short ropeway ride with a wide view of the foothills. Landour and Lal Tibba are quieter, with old stone houses and deodar forest. Kempty Falls, about 15 km from Mussoorie, is the best-known waterfall. Return to Dehradun by evening. Option B: A Haridwar and Rishikesh day trip Rishikesh comes first, with Triveni Ghat, Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula in the morning light. Haridwar follows, with Mansa Devi Temple and Har Ki Pauri in the afternoon. The evening Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri, with lamps floating on the river, is the highlight, and it begins around sunset. The return drive to Dehradun is after dark, so we use an experienced driver. Option C: A Dehradun city sightseeing day Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is a cave temple dedicated to Shiva, with water dripping on the lingam. Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani) is a natural cave formation with a stream you can walk through. Sahastradhara has sulphur springs and a gentle waterfall. The Forest Research Institute is a large colonial building with museums, and Mindrolling Monastery is a large Tibetan Buddhist complex with a tall stupa. Paltan Bazaar and the Clock Tower are good for an evening of shopping and street food. Which one for which traveller? Families with elders usually prefer Option C or a shorter Option A. First-time visitors who want hills should choose Option A. Pilgrims and photographers will love Option B. If you have only half a day, we can combine two sights from different options. Can we add river rafting? River rafting in Rishikesh is available outside the monsoon months, and it adds about two to three hours. It is optional and booked separately, so please tell us in advance if you want it. Can we do Dhanaulti in a day? Yes, with an early start. Dhanaulti is about two hours from Dehradun, with a forest eco park and a view of the hills. It makes a good alternative to Option A if you want fewer crowds. Seasons September to November and March to June are the most comfortable. Winter is cold and foggy, and the monsoon can cause landslides on hill roads. What to eat Momos, thukpa, aloo parathas, hot maggi, bun omelette and fresh pastries are the classic snacks. In Haridwar and Rishikesh, you will find simple pure vegetarian thalis and sweets. Which car for which group? Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups. Practical tips Start early, carry water, wear comfortable shoes, keep valuables minimal and follow local rules at ghats and waterfalls. Do not enter fast-flowing water.
