Uttarakhand Travel Guide

Uttarakhand Tour Package: Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Nainital and Corbett Uttarakhand is called Dev Bhoomi, the land of the gods, and it is also one of the most varied travel states in India. This guide explains the classic circuit, the distances between stops, the best seasons and how to choose between a 4, 6 or 8 day plan. Why not a 1 to 3 day trip? The distances in Uttarakhand look small on the map but the mountain roads are slow. Mussoorie to Nainital alone is a full day of driving. A 1, 2 or 3 day plan would mean spending most of your time in the car, so this package starts at four days. The route in numbers Dehradun to Haridwar is about 55 km, roughly an hour and a half. Haridwar to Rishikesh is about 25 km, around 45 minutes. Rishikesh to Mussoorie is about 80 to 90 km, around three hours. Mussoorie to Nainital is about 290 to 300 km, around eight to nine hours. Nainital to Jim Corbett (Ramnagar) is about 65 km, around two hours. Option A: A 4 day, 3 night trip Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie. A good choice for a long weekend. Option B: A 6 day, 5 night trip All of Option A, plus a second Mussoorie day and a morning in Nainital. Option C: An 8 day, 7 night trip All of Option B, plus a full day in Nainital, a night at Jim Corbett and a comfortable return. Haridwar Haridwar is where the Ganga leaves the mountains. Har Ki Pauri is the main ghat, and the evening aarti, with hundreds of lamps floating on the river, is the highlight. Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples sit on hills above the town, and both can be reached by ropeway. Rishikesh Rishikesh is a mix of spirituality and adventure. Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula are the famous suspension bridges, and Triveni Ghat has a large evening aarti. Parmarth Niketan also holds a well-known evening aarti. Optional river rafting is available outside the monsoon months, and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a popular half-day trip. Mussoorie Gun Hill gives a wide view of the foothills, Company Garden is a landscaped park, Kempty Falls is the best-known waterfall, and Landour and Lal Tibba offer a quiet, old-world atmosphere. Mall Road is the place for an evening walk. Nainital Nainital is built around Naini Lake, and boating is the classic activity. Naina Devi Temple is on the lake shore, Snow View Point and Tiffin Top give mountain views in clear weather, and Mall Road is lively in the evening. Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal are quieter lakes nearby. Jim Corbett National Park Corbett is India’s oldest national park, and it is known for its tigers, elephants and rich birdlife. Safari zones need advance booking, and their seasons and closing days vary. The Corbett Museum at Kaladhungi preserves the old home of the hunter turned conservationist Jim Corbett. Seasons September to November and March to June are the most comfortable. Winter is cold, with occasional snow at higher places. The monsoon brings landslides and road closures. Char Dham note Char Dham is a separate seasonal yatra with registration, and it is not part of this package. What to eat Try aloo ke gutke, bhatt ki churkani, kafuli and jhangora kheer in Garhwal and Kumaon. In the tourist towns you will find momos, thukpa, parathas, thalis and fresh pastries. Which car for which group? Hatchback or sedan for 1 to 3 people, Ertiga for 4 to 6, Innova Crysta for comfort on mountain roads, Tempo Traveller for 8 to 17, and a mini bus for larger groups. Where to stay Each stop has hotels, resorts and homestays in every budget. Rooms fill up on weekends and holidays, so book early. Practical tips Start early, carry warm layers, wear shoes with grip, keep an eye on the weather and road updates in the monsoon, and never drive hill roads at night.
